From the Commodore

I would like to wish all of our traveling members fair winds and swift passage to points outside of Florida. The Sailing Club looks forward to your safe return in the Fall. It has been a busy travel time for Bob and I. We were in the Arizona desert for a week of work for Bob and play for me. Upon our return from the desert we set off on Transition for a two week sabbatical. What a contrast from dry desert to wet boat!

It is wonderful to finally get out on the water with nothing pressing and no set place to be. The high point of the day is listening to marine weather in the morning over coffee and deciding what we want to do on any given day. We chose to head North instead of the Dry Tortugas due to weather and time constraints. We made it as far North as Long Boat Key. Two weeks does not seem like a long time but we still covered a lot of water, by way of the ICW and offshore. Time made good underway we hit seven anchorages and one marina. We’ve met some wonderful people along the way as well as crossing paths with PGSC Members.

It’s amazing how people are drawn to the water and to visiting boats in particular. Each time we make landfall by dinghy there are always people to greet us and have a conversation about our sailing adventures. As conversations go… a topic that always comes up is the Punta Gorda Sailing Club. I am constantly impressed that PGSC’s Burgee is so widely recognized and respected here on the West Coast of Florida. At times we’ve run into familiar faces and boats at various anchorages. Boat cards and staples exchanged. Life on the boat is so uncomplicated we just can’t wait until we can do this on a full time basis.

While I am off enjoying myself (selfish me), your Board and the many who help us out have been working hard for you. I would like to say many thanks to each of you for taking the time to ensure the smooth operation of this great Sailing Club. Take the time and get out on the water whether it’s for a race, a cruise or just to go out for a sail. There is always something going on, so get involved meet some new people, invite others to join you. I will be absent once again from the May meeting as I will be underway to Key West. As always, I will be promoting Sailing and Racing on Charlotte Harbor. I want to thank our Club members who travel and continue to do the same. I look forward to seeing everyone at Pelican Bay over Memorial Day weekend, until next month…
