2003 PGSC Memorial Weekend Cruise to Cayo Costa

Cayo Costa is a Spanish name that means "key by the coast"
We know this place as an unspoiled barrier island featuring seven miles of brilliant white beach, and 2,500 acres of pine forest, oak/palm hammock, and mangrove swamp at the mouth of Charlotte Harbor.

In the 1800s, the island was reputed to be the stronghold of various pirates, including Jose Gasparilla. During the Civil War, the island was thought to be used as a hiding place for Union sympathizers . In the early 1900's, this unspoiled barrier island was used as a quarantine station for tall ships.         Now, most of the island is a Florida State Park and it is paradise for many local boaters.
