The America's Cup competition
The AC34 World Cup Series is the beginning of a series of races
that culminate in the final match in September 2013. The 2011-2012 AC
World Series will be sailed in the AC45, the forerunner to the next
generation of America’s Cup boats. Focused on creating more on-the-water
excitement for both the teams and the fans, the AC45 wing-sailed catamaran
was designed for both speed and close racing. While capable of closing
speeds of up to 30 knots, the AC45 remains nimble enough to handle the tight,
tactical race courses planned by America’s Cup Race Management (ACRM).

The 2012-2013 season will be sailed in the larger and faster America’s Cup
boats, the AC72, and its champion will be crowned just prior to the start of
the Louis Vuitton Cup (America’s Cup Challenger Series) in July 2013. This
AC World Series will also enable all teams seeking to compete in the
America’s Cup Finals in September 2013 to be race-ready for the AC72.

It was recently announced that Naples, Italy will be hosting a stop on
the America's Cup World Series. The AC World Series format includes
a mix of speed trials, match racing, and fleet racing, and provide an
opportunity to heighten the awareness of the America's Cup
prior to the 2013 match. The following is the 2012 schedule -

April 7-15; Naples, Italy
May 12-20; Venice, Italy
June 23-July 1; Newport, USA
Aug.11-19; SanFrancisco
Aug. 27-Sept 2; SanFrancisco

They plan to promote, publicize and Televise all of the matches to expose
millions more fans to the sport of high-performance sailing. The AC
World Series will feature both fleet and match racing at each event.

After the AC World Series comes the
Louis Vuitton Cup regatta.
Here is the latest info on the Louis Vuitton Cup regatta added on 7/17 -

The Louis Vuitton Cup regatta, also known as the America's Cup Challenger Series, is designed
to identify and help create the strongest possible challenger to meet the defender in the subsequent
America's Cup Match. The first day of racing will be July 4, and the last possible day September 1.

The first stage will consist of a series of four fleet races. The winner of each
race will score 10 points, with six points for second, and two for third.

The second and third series will both be round-robin match race series.  The winner of
each race in the second series will score 10 points and in the third series 12 points.

The top four teams will progress to the semifinals, with the top-ranked challenger racing
the fourth-placed team and the second-ranked team racing the third-placed.

Both semifinals will be best-of-seven, with the first to win four races progressing to the final.

The final will be a best-of-nine race series to decide who
will face Oracle Racing in the America's Cup Match.

Emirates Team New Zealand hold the Louis Vuitton Cup, having won it in Valencia in 2007.

We hope that gives everyone a good perspective of what America's
Cup 34 is all about. The bottom line is that you are going to
be hearing about it and seeing it for a long time to come.
