Fleets fill Charlotte Harbor as regatta wraps up
After two days of heavy winds and high waves, Mother Nature delivered
Chamber of Commerce weather for the final day of the inaugural Charlotte
Harbor Regatta, Sunday, Feb. 7 on Charlotte Harbor, Florida. Read more HERE.

Under postponement
Waiting for the wind ...
Principal Race Officer Harold Bennett has postponed the first race
of the 33rd America's Cup Match. Originally scheduled to start at 10:06 CET,
the race was postponed due to very light and shifty winds. At start time,
there was less than two knots of wind in the start area.

13:46
First information is that there will be no race today. AP flag is over A.
That means Race 1 will take place, weather permitting at 1006 local time.

12:21

It is reported that things did look a little more promising. The windward mark has
moved north and west, so it is now just over two miles offshore at El Saler beach.
And the breeze is building and at 11-12 knots at 240 degrees there, so the breeze
is still moving left. At the start boat, offshore, there is only 1.5 to 3 knots. Of course
there are no published, set limits of windstrength and Principal Race Officer Harold
Bennett has refused to be drawn to discuss 'numbers'. As background... there is a
prescription from the Deed of Gift in the Sailing Instructions which, in essence, says
the Race Committee 'may' stop Leg 1 if in its opinion there is a wind shift of 30
degrees. So, a variance of more than 40 degrees between WW1 mark and the start,
and now (in as long a it has taken to write this) 80 degrees, is not going to inspire
him with real confidence to 'go'.

10:14

The breeze in the start area does remain quite light and the start is still delayed.
Start area is set up about 27 miles east of Valencia. The two race yachts Alinghi 5
and USA are sitting almost alongside each other a few hundred metres from the
committee boat. Crews look relatively relaxed, just discussing possible weather
scenarios. There is reported to be breeze closer to the SW'ly horizon but it is not
moving towards the start area very quickly.

You can watch the America's Cup race live from anywhere in the world at the
33rd Cup site, and if that site goes down from the traffic, you'll still be able to catch
the identical feed at BMW/Oracle Racing's site. ENJOY !  In addition to getting up
very early in the morning, you will need a good broadband internet connection, a
newer PC with good processing horsepower and lots of memory in order to watch
the live streaming of this event, If getting up in the middle of the night is not your
forte and the connection and PC outlined above doesn't describe your setup, just
watch the recaps on these websites and come back to this website a little later on.

Here is how it all started ...
The reigning monarch Queen Victoria, who witnessed this
yacht racing event from her royal yacht, reportedly turned
to one of her attendants to inquire who was in second place.

"Your majesty, there is no second," came the reply, a
phrase that neatly summarizes what this race is all about.
But, do you know why it's called the "America's Cup" ?
( It's called the America's Cup because the first sailing vessel that
won the big silver cup was a schooner named "America".)

The 138 foot barquentine "Verona"
Sailing a Windjammer Around the World
Does that idea appeal to you ?
It did to PGSC Club Members Don & Mary Blake
In the course of a year, Don & Mary Blake sailed around the world on the "Verona" .
They did it a while ago - in 1965 and 1966.  They made this voyage with 23 other sailors.  Navigation was by sextant ( remember those ? ) There was no GPS. They had a compelling adventure that involved a lot of interaction  with people from all over the world and even had a bout with a typhoon in the South China Sea.
Want to hear more ? You can ...
- on February 25th at 7 PM
- at Edison State College Auditorium
- in Punta Gorda.
Tickets are $10 & can be purchased in advance or at the door.
This presentation is part of the "Global Adventures" Lecture Series
of the Lifelong Learning Institute at Edison State College.

The America's Cup defender, Societe Nautique de Geneve (SNG), has issued
a revised Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions for the 33rd America's Cup
Match. See the Latest update of the NOR and Sailing Instructions ...

The New York Supreme Court has set a date of February 25 to hear the
“constructed in country” case concerning the sails being used by Alinghi 5.
The Golden Gate Yacht Club contends that the Deed of Gift requires the sails
for each team to be built in their country, and that the Swiss team has
not followed this rule. If USA17 wins in Valencia, it's a moot point.

- Over a Barrel -
The most common method of punishment aboard ship was flogging. The unfortunate sailor
was tied to a grating, mast or over a barrel and flogged  A punishment that was even worse
was "Kissing the gunner’s daughter".  The unfortunate sailor in this situation was tied
over the barrel of a deck cannon while it was being fired. OH Man - that had to really hurt !
